About me
I'm Susan Metzger, MS, MFA, MBA — couples counselor in Fort Collins, CO.
I've spent 45 years helping couples find their way back to each other. I know what it feels like when a relationship falls apart — and I know what it takes to rebuild one.
My story
Hello. I'm Susan. My couples are tired of fighting, and they're tired of being disconnected. They are lonely, scared, sad, and angry that their vision of being coupled has not materialized. They feel unrecognized, and therefore unloved, by their partners. Perhaps they've already decided to end things, and counseling is a last resort — or they are still committed to the relationship but know they need help.
My perspective comes from decades of experience, a few failed marriages, and plenty of wisdom. I have tried and failed at more than one marriage. Had I known then what I know now about the Gottmans' "Four Horsemen," "Great Listener," and "turning toward bids for connection," I would still be married to my first husband. I empathize with most problems that couples face and can help you learn what your and your partner's needs are.
I see many middle-aged and older couples but also enjoy working with those in their 20s and 30s. I also speak German, and I work with individuals as well as couples. In-person is preferable, but I offer Zoom sessions too — and weekends can work.

How I work
The Gottman Method is based on decades of research on 3,000+ couples. I begin with each partner completing the online Gottman Relationship Check-Up, followed by a 90-minute intake couple interview and 45-minute individual sessions. I also offer optional MBTI assessment, which helps each partner understand who they are and what their own preferences are.
I have advanced certification in Trauma, PTSD, and Affairs through the Gottman Institute. Emotional triggers from past experiences are a common cause of conflict, and I work hard to identify these and coach couples to dialogue about them.
Sessions are $140 and I offer a sliding scale for those who may be eligible. I don't take insurance, but I provide receipts with insurance codes so you may submit them yourself — a number of my clients have successfully collected from their insurer this way.
No judgment
Whatever brought you here, you'll be met with compassion and respect — not evaluation.
Both partners matter
I work hard to ensure both of you feel equally seen and supported throughout our work together.
Real progress
I'm not interested in sessions that feel good but go nowhere. I'm here to help you make lasting change.
